For the second year in a row, Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care in Fall River, MA has been awarded a grant from the Colon Cancer Coalition for providing colon cancer prevention, education, and screening programs to the underserved populations in the community. The funds for this grant were raised during Get Your Rear in Gear – Boston held in September 2015.

FIT cardIn the last year, Southcoast Health was able to use the original grant money to purchase 200 FIT kits (fecal immunochemical test kits) and processing for vulnerable community members, as well as host a “Taste of Wellness” day. In addition, Southcoast Health hosted an educational training and dinner for community health workers. At this event, community health workers, employees, and community leaders joined together to focus on colon cancer prevention facts, FIT kit training, and distribution of kits. Twenty-six members attended this event. Furthermore, the grant was used to host a colon cancer support group Survivor Celebration Breakfast.

This year, the grant from the Colon Cancer Coalition will again help Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care to purchase and process FIT kits, hold an educational lecture for local community health workers, and host a colon cancer support group Survivor Celebration Breakfast.
