This is the third consecutive year the Utica-Rome Speedway is playing host to the Gene Kotary Memorial. Not only is this the biggest event of the year for the division at the Utica-Rome Speedway, but it’s one of the highest paying events in the Northeast for the competitive full-fendered division with entries expect from all corners of New York and parts of Canada.
Gene Kotary was a mainstay at Utica-Rome Speedway in its final days as a pavement facility. He was the 1978 track champion in the asphalt Sheet Stock’s winning the final feature for the division.
On the night in 1978 he shared the spotlight with NASCAR Hall of Fame member and legendary Rome, NY, driver Richie Evans. Overall Kotary had 10 career feature wins at Utica-Rome.
In 2018 Pete Stafanski was able to best out a strong field of Pro Stocks with Justin Knight finishing in the runner-up position at the Gene Kotary Memorial Race. As a result of the success of that event, it returns in 2019 with the second edition being bigger and better. It has a purse of over $4,000 including $1,000 going to the winner and $100 just to take the green flag.
