Today, November 30, Michigan photojournalist, Dave Klein embarks on journey across the southern United States. His goals: to raise awareness and funds for colorectal cancer screening, show support for his good friend Donna, and make connections with people he would otherwise never encounter.

Solo cyclist, Dave Klein

Dave Klein

Delayed a year because of COVID restrictions along his route, Dave has been planning his solo cycling trip from Los Angeles to St. Augustine, FL, for over 18 months. He is traveling unsupported on two wheels. His petals are powered by the strength he garners from watching Donna fight stage IV colorectal cancer, his willingness push himself to the limits, and the hopefulness to find community and comradery on the road.

Dave looks at this solo endeavor a chance to push himself outside of his comfort zone. On shorter journeys he has found peace and connection with humankind on the road. “With everything going on in our country,” Dave noted, “the vast majority of people are just looking for some way to reach out and connect with others.” In this way he has found the kindness of others looking out for a fellow human and a sense of peace in that discovery.

Dave will rely on that human bond as he travels 3,205 miles across eight states. His route takes him through the desert in Arizona, the Rocky Mountains in New Mexico, and long stretches of Texas with nothing but acers of ranch land, long horn cattle and the hospitality of the ranchers he meets along the way.

Donna

“I’m looking forward to who am I going to meet,” Dave remarked. “This is one of the most enriching opportunities to relate with people one-on-one. On the road, I believe that things that don’t just spontaneously happen. The beauty of the journey is getting outside of myself and inviting those I meet along the way to get outside themselves as well.”

Dave rides in honor of his good friend Donna, a stage IV colon cancer patient he describes as infinitely positive. As she’s endured treatments and through the ups and downs that come with a cancer diagnosis she continues to experience life and all it’s adventures. “Donna’s positive energy is obvious and contagious. I’ve always wanted to ride a bicycle cross-country. [This year, I thought] why not turn it into a mission with a purpose?”

You can follow Dave’s cross-country ride and on Instagram, and Twitter, use #TourWithDave to follow along. He will be updated his website, too. We will post regular updates to this page as well.

“On the road of life, you think you are steering the ship, but in actuality there are things greater than us, we are just a conduit for the greater good.”

~ Dave Klein, cross-country cyclist
