Team Captain Martha Golden from UNCSA Cancer Support Group Shares Why She Participates in Tour De Tush

By April 25, 2023Featured Articles

The UNCSA Cancer Support Group was formed in February 2023. We are staff and faculty at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

We are caregivers and survivors who want to raise awareness of the need for screenings with our colleagues. We know it can be easier to talk about cancer treatment with people who have been through it. I am a breast cancer survivor, and I’ve had 2 colonoscopies.

We formed a team for Get Your Rear in Gear – Winston-Salem in March, and put an announcement about our team in the school’s weekly email to staff and faculty. We hoped this would start raising awareness of the need for screening.

Afterwards, I saw something on the Colon Cancer Coalition website about the Tour de Tush. I am a French teacher, so I immediately thought of the Tour de France! I plan to participate virtually with my stationary recumbent bike. We’re currently working to grow our Tour de Tush team. Some of our group members are colon cancer survivors and caregivers. I have learned so much about colon cancer in the last month, as I spent time with our members and with survivors’ families and caregivers at the Get Your Rear in Gear- Winston-Salem race.

Join Martha and the UNCSA Cancer Support Group in this year’s Tour De Tush!
