Faces of Blue: Patricia Summerland

By January 4, 2023Faces of Blue

I was diagnosed March 3, 2021, after using Cologuard and putting off colonoscopy twice due to life issues. The day that changed my life was when I heard the words “you have cancer” and when I found out that my biopsy came back malignant and that I would need to see an oncologist and get prepared for surgery to remove it right away. When the surgeon said you could only have five years to live, my PTSD from earlier traumas kicked in.

I was a person who worked out, ate right and took care of myself but had a stressful and challenging life. I was an 80s Female Pro-Wrestler from Glow on TV. I was shocked to find out that my doctor had to remove half of my colon and half of my rectum to get the tumor and a colostomy bag was terrifying and life changing. Luckily my surgery was a success. My lymph nodes were clear when taken out, and cancer had left me at stage Ia.

In March of 2022, I went back to the doctor to see if there are any recurrences. As a result, some new spots on my lungs were found and I continue to have pain in my hip, reminding me that the road can be never ending, but I’m hanging in there.

I share my story to help others be aware and get checked & help save lives. Before this surgery, I also had to remove implants that were recalled for lymphoma so I’m an advocate for BII (breast implant illness) and colon cancer. Get your colonoscopy. Early detection is vital for cancer. Don’t delay in getting a colonoscopy or checkup. Awareness is Key.
