Survivor Story: Cathy Headley

I will be 50 by the time the race is! I am living because I listened to my body. Praise the Lord. I am a mother of two, a wife, a professor in Exercise and Sport Science. It was the night before a sprint triathlon in August 2007. I was with my little sister. I noticed blood in my stool (weird). I put off contacting my physician- it couldn’t be anything bad….

In October I called my physician due to the same symptom. I was referred to the gastroenterologist for a colonoscopy. I had this in November, 2007. The doctor found an olive size polyp that he removed. He was impressed with the size, but said it would be okay. The doctor stated that I could call the hotline in a week with details. A couple days later the nurse called and said the polyp was pre-cancerous and if I hadn’t come in… If I had the colonoscopy when I was 50, it would be full-blown cancer. Praise the Lord!

Currently, I continue to be healthy. Train for triathlon, run, walk with my husband, eat healthier, promote health and wellness to ALL I connect with.

For others I would suggest, go to the doctor when you think something is wrong. Don’t deny what you are feeling. Be aware of your body! Be sensitive and listen to it. Don’t take anything for granted.
